January 2007 Campfire Story

Lightening Bugs Beware

Lightening Bugs Beware

I was raised back in N.Y. and had caught lightning bugs as a kid, however my wife was raised in Alaska and had never seen them. We were tent camping in Nebraska in 67 and a thunder storm was brewing; this was also new to her. We were late stopping so we lit our lantern and were about to eat when she saw what appeared to be two eyes in the brush a short distance away and they kept blinking. Being a brave young husband I told her I would protect her as it was probably some wild animal. I grabbed a hatchet and went out to the brush where she couldn’t see me as it was pitch black out by now and the wind was starting to blow. I thrashed around, making lots of noise, messed up my hair and clothes and came staggering back to camp and she thought I had been in a horrible fight. I told her the animal had gotten away but not before I had ripped its eyes out, whereupon I opened my closed hand and showed her the lightning bugs happily blinking away. Needless to say we have laughed over this many times in the last 42 years of camping together.
